I am an avid reader. Now I can't remember the last time I read a novel, a self-help book, or even a newspaper from beginning to end, but give me something written on photography, and if it gets my attention, I'll devour it. Lately, photographic essays have been my "thing."
The most recent one I read was about storytelling through images. We see something that interests or touches us in some way for some reason, and we photograph it. But if we had to, could we always describe the story in words? The author explains that we rarely make images without reason; that there is always a story behind what we record with our cameras.
This photograph was taken last weekend. I first saw this as we were taking my son to the airport for his flight to Boston after the Thanksgiving break. I had my camera with me, but the very last thing I was thinking about was using it. I was too busy already missing him. Now many weeks later, it was still with me. Enough so that I drove well over an hour just to photograph it. Once I arrived, I realized that there was no way I was going to get what I wanted without setting up my tripod on the NYS Thruway, and from experience I can tell you that the state police do not think very much of that! So I did what I could to simply just get it.
Back at home, I stared at it on my screen, and just kind of asked myself... "Why??" I mean it's a tree. A tree with a fence around it. Okay, so there are a few old gravestones there also, but still, I drove over an hour for this??? For some reason, I remembered the essay. "We rarely make images without reason." I however, was convinced that I was in possession of an image that surely proved this wrong, so I used a texture on it, did not like that, converted it to black and white, and sent it to "Neverland" (my external hard drive).
In the midst of a conversation with a friend about my weekend, there it was! The story behind this seemingly pointless image that for some reason I just had to photograph. The feeling that this image conveys to me is precisely the way I felt on the way to the airport that morning. It was the first time my son was flying alone, and I was missing him before he'd even gotten on the plane. I felt as lonesome as this tree looks. Now really, is that neat or what???
Anyway, this was such an amazing feeling for me, and I want you to share it too. Find an image that you’ve made; one that you really cannot seem to find a story for. Keep it in your mind, and just kind of toss it around there from time to time. I'll just bet that you'll find your story too.
Some exciting news to share! The Creative Exchange has been selected as “Blog of the Month,” at Jeanne’s “Butterfly Tales.” This is truly a testament to each of you, for without you, your talent, and your never-ending kindness, The Creative Exchange simply would not be, and so I congratulate and thank each of you, and a special thank you Jeanne, for this special treat!
Happy Monday to you!

Oh gosh, Lisa! My image for creative exchange - I kind of had to mull over it for quite a while too! I can totally relate to your post :)
Congrats on the Giants win and for this lovely blog being nominated!
Have a great week!
Disconcerting the way we do things without realizing. At the time anyway. Have you seen tripods you can screw to your car side window? Or are you not allowed to even pull over on the hard shoulder?
Hi Lisa,
First of all, congrats on the blog award! You definitely deserve applause for the inspiration and encouragement that you provide on this wonderful site.
It was interesting to hear the story of how the significance of this spot and image was revealed to you. Sounds like it just needed to brew a bit. I find it to be a very expressive piece with layers of meaning just ripe for storytelling! Funny how the viewer gets to bring their own imagination and stories to an image, also.
Wishing you a wonderful week,
xo~ Anna
What a dramatic photo--and it does convey the very feeling you felt when sending your son off to
Boston. You are so right--every photo has a story and conveys a feeling. Thanks for sharing, Lisa. Have a lovely week. Mickie :)
This is a lovely photo. I find that some photos do speak to my heart without me understanding why till later. Congrats on your award!
Hi, Lisa! Congratulations for you being selected as Blog of the Month.
I think your story is always interesting and inspiring for many people. And I can feel your warmhearted mind in every blog.
I can feel various things by this photo too.
Congrats on this wonderful blog getting the award, and to you for making it possible! I love your story about the finding the story of your special image. I know that the images that I treasure are those that have emotional connections, even if they are not the best in a technical sense.
Lisa...you always make me think, and I'll have to think longer about "the story." Congratulations on the blog award!
Interesting reading and I like your picture very much! It has something special to it that I can't find the words for...
What a gorgeous image Lisa! Love the wide angle. Too, that fence is just amazing!
Congratulations on being chosen for "Blog of the Month"! :)
your lovely shot makes me wonder why the fence is there. :)
Congrats to the award. :)
A wonderful tree in black-white. Great shot. Have a nice new week, Lisa.
Kind regards, Synnöve
wonderful! :)
Congratulation on the blog award.
Great Black & white shot...I wonder if the tree was planted in memory of someone buried there.
I know exactly what you mean - about our unconscious or subconscious or whatever it is that makes us stop and make a photograph. And - what a beautiful image yours is!
Your subconscious was tugging at your sleeve Lisa! An amazingly moving image, I feel it is a place where a lot of strong feelings have been expressed, it's beautiful in it's starkness. Have a great week Lisa :)
this is a lovely image you've portrayed Lisa; I love the story attached to it.
Congrats on the blog award.
Beautiful, moving image, love it!
It is difficult to find words to describe what I felt when I saw this photo.
But my first thought when I saw the tree was 'Why are you protected by a fence in your loneliness?'.
Wish you a beautiful, new week Lisa.
Mette
Even before I read your words I could feel a story from this image - what. an. incredible. capture. And the thing is, your son , not that I'm delving into none of my business area here into your relationship, but generally speaking, our children have no idea to the depth of the love we feel for them, but in years to come, maybe he'll understand that once he sees this photo as well as your story. Thank you for your continuing inspiration.
Once again, your beautiful words illustrate your shot perfectly.
Congratulations on being blog of the month!
Beautiful shot Lisa - and lots to think about!! Thanks!
such a beautiful photograph!
congrats on blog of the month!!
Congrats Lisa! Wow! Blog of the month - Hurra!
Love your bw with the worried sky and snowhite fence :)
I LOVE your image of the tree...it speaks perfectly of the mood you were in while dropping off your son at the airport. I'm always drawn to trees in my photography...I think their appearance(s) are so symbolic of the human condition at any given moment - full, empty, vibrant, bleak. This was a wonderful post that resonated - thank you for sharing your gorgeous photo and your words!
Lisa - congrats on the well-deserved accolade. Thank you for your continuing efforts to provide this forum for us to share together the images from our heart. For providing me with a place that I can put together images and words and find my story.
Congrats on the "blog of the month"...I am not surprised at all. You've created a wonderful space for yourself and for others.
About this tree image. I'm picturing you on the highway gathering the shot. I'm glad you drove the hour back to "get" it.
I like images of lone things-they speak to me, and I think you're right about the mood at the time you saw it.
However....I also see amidst the gravestones (grief) a tree flourishing and standing tall alone...making it-and wonder is that you or is it your son.
Or maybe I'm too big on the metaphor thing which is not my place to do with YOUR image.
Never the less...I like it, and I think it speaks.
Hopefully today you're in the mood for happy bright and cheery pictures.
I'll be back later for my own CE as soon as I can get my thoughts and pics together.
I like it...love the mood!
what a gorgeous photograph lisa, wow....so much to see in one single shot. the fence is fabulous and i love the dark dramatic sky!!
congrats on the selection as blog of the month, so well deserved!!
so happy to be here lisa, thanks for hosting this!!
I like this idea Lisa .. taking a photo and wrapping a story around it. Might be giving it a try!
It's a great photo. I have photos that I just love, and I may never know why!
I'm so sorry, Lisa, but I didn't read this before I posted my pic, so I didn't post 'a shot w/ a story'... I'll keep this in mind, tho!
This shot is awesome & there's a beautiful story behind it, too... I love the texture... how did you get the fence sooo white? =)
For a while I was posting a photo and asking my readers to tell me a story about it .. interestingly I didnt get many stories but the ones I got were super.
Congrats on the Blog of the Month .. and for telling this great story to illustrate with words what we're seeing .. and its a superb photo!
This is a fabulous photo and story Lisa! A wonderful Photo-Heart Connection. :)
I can totally relate about certain captures that speak. Wonderful image!
Lisa, I always happy when I relate to what you wrote. I didn't read recently any decent book but when I am in Barnes and Noble I am always looking for something new and interesting in photography area.
I love this picture of lonely tree. I read with a great interest what you wrote about it and how you felt when you tried to work with it. I love so much colors. Everyday I say to myself that I have to start black and white photography and I don't do it. This picture has an extremely beautiful poetic composition. It is also very emotional composition. Sometimes I think nature has also sad feelings.
Dear Lisa, I can understand how you felt when you began to miss your son even before he was on an airplane. I am the same. I miss my daughter all the time, she doesn't live with me anymore. I worry about her all the time, and I call her all the time....
And I am extremely happy for your Creative Exchange that it was selected as Blog of the Month. I think about Creative Exchange as the best thing ever happened to me. This is a very unique and wonderful blog. Lisa, my world became bigger and more interesting because of Creative Exchange.
Warm hugs and all the very best to you, my dear Lisa.
This is an awesome bw photo, Lisa!
So dramatic with the threatening sky and the white fence. Your story and the story told by the photo are so beautifully interrelated.
Congratulations on the award!
Amazing image...I can so relate to what you were feeling...I already feel that way and I have a few more months to go!
First of all - congratulations, Lisa! The award is more than deserved!
I love your photo and also the story behind it! I do struggle with finding a story behind my photos but I will look at that with different eyes now!
Have a wonderful, Lisa! And I hope to catch up over the week again!
It is a valuable psychological process to look a little more deeply at what we are drawn to express with any artistic medium.
You post illustrates that so beautifully, Lisa.
Analysis while in the middle of artistic endeavors can often be counterproductive - pulling it out of our creative process. Save the analysis for after the work is done.
You were drawn to a compelling image that rings a few of my bells too. Thanks for sharing it!
Congrats on "blog of the month".
This is a really lovely picture - I think it being b/w really brings out the best in it as well. I always think that pictures are a great way to express how we are feeling.
Congratulations on being blog of the month - you and your wonderful blog really deserve it.
I have always been attracted to the lone tree, something about the image that "does" convey a story. Beautiful image and congrats on this being chosen as blog of the month....it's because of you!!
It's a beautiful and engaging image for sure! I have a photo I took on Christmas Eve and have sat before it and couldn't find the right words until I went to something at my daughter's school - I now know and have the words, I just needed the time to know what those were. Now I need time to put them on paper.
But I do think there is a connection between our subconcious and our photos! And congrats to being chosen as blog of the month, very exciting!!
congrats on your well deserved award , lisa.
it doesn't surprise me though.
your blog is exceedingly divine as is your photo above. (and every single one of yours.
xo
great dramatic photo, perfect for winter!
That is such a gorgeous photo!!!
Congrats on the blog award:)
The picture is great, it wakes emotions like loneliness even without your story.
Wonderful B & W, I like the light, charming the tree bare. Greetings.
That's a beautiful photo! So glad you shared it.
Lisa, I LOVE your story! It's quite thought provoking. So many of my photos have stories, but I really like yours today, with so much emotion. I'm glad you returned to take the picture that has a heart. Thanks for sharing.
Beverly
Congratulations on a very deserving blog award!
Congratulations Lisa! You deserve it because you have a beautiful blog and you've given us the opportunity to link here. I do have to say that the images, the links as a group, are like eye candy this week.
Your lonely tree image is very unique and stately.
Hi Lisa. Needless to say, you are one friend we will treasure forever. Oh you know why.
Re: pictures that tell a story. I think images like photographs and works of art (paintings, sculpture, pottery, music, poetry, etc.) tell a story. Sometimes it is clear to us what it narrates. Sometimes it is not simply because the story is part of our being. And our being is not always a 'verbal' one. When you 'know' it it means the story and meaning is understood by your soul.
I always have this tree along the highway which I call mine. People laugh every time I say this but one of these days, if I can charm somebody to stop for a shot, I will.
Have another meaningful week, Lisa!
And Sweepy sends his woofy kiss.
We will be back next week. Promise ;-)
I'm back for another week! enjoying the marvelous collection of photos here!
wow! It's sooooo good!
;)
And i really liked your little story about it ;)
It's my first time visiting here and was inspired to participate. I'm looking forward to visiting the work of all the other photographers and hearing some of their stories.
Your B&W photo is fantastic - love the way the fence pops right out at the view - really, really, cool!!
Well, the photo (and processing) is wonderful.
I can see why this caught your eye.
But, add the story . . .
and, wow . . .
totally memorable.
Congratulations on the blog award.
This is a great photography.
You are right, there are photographs which speak to my heart:)
Regards and best wishes
Great shot! And it's so true about photographs speaking to the heart.
I believe images like this have so much more power in B&W.
Thanks for hosting :)
Hi Lisa! This photo is SO lovely! It has such an interesting "feel" to it. Thank you for sharing your story. Congratulations on the Blog of the Month too!
beautiful image! my first time here... thanks for hosting!
Oh my gosh! Lisa, this photo is out of this world! I LOVE it!
What a beautiful post. I took your challenge and looked at my photos through new eyes...there's definitely a story there. And it's one I didn't realize until I actually looked for it. Now I know why I capture the kinds of photos I do. Thank you for posting this. It was quite eye opening. ---And congrats on being recognized for blog of the month. :)
A great photo, so dramatic with the threatening sky.
...my great compliments ...
Best regards, Karin
i think it's beautiful... and it beckons me home. i used to take the NYS thruway b/t NY and "upstate", the catskills. i don't remember this scene, tho... anywhere close?
(yes, this is my 3rd comment?!) ps: i enjoyed the content of your post, too... and i truly believe this. i take pictures of crazy things sometimes, and sometimes...
Congratulations Lisa. I enjoyed your story about your picture. It is funny what catches our eye when we are out and about. It must have some meaning. V
@ Patty,
This actually sits almost right on the Thruway.
Oh, Lisa, this is wonderful!
Lisa, this is stunning! I love the mood and the lines. Thank you for sharing!
The photo is amazing and I love that you figured out the story behind taking it!
I am "stupid crazy" about that photo! This is photographic poetic excellence. I would have gone back as well. I'd love to know the book you are reading as this is just the type of imagery I long to take more often!
Wow! Incredible edit and beautiful textures! This should be framed.
LIsa..what an extraordinary photograph! There's the physical landscape and a powerful emotional landscape, too. You've communicated both so powerfully. Thank you for sharing it...extraordinary!
Such a striking photograph Lisa...well worth the trip back, just so perfectly suited to black and white, it 'speaks' volumes!!!
What lovely sentiments in this piece.
Oh, I love the way the white fence is lit up so brightly! :D
Firstly, congratulations for having won "Blog of the Month!"
Secondly, I do love your photograph. The scene simply gnaws at your soul as if asking you to take a minute or so to look at it and then close your eyes and engage in some sort of spiritual introspection. I did it and the inkling I got afterwards was that I should practice the 'art of letting go' more often.
Btw, did you know that here in Bohol many locals believe that every tree houses a spirit?
I will join your site if I may, though I've been following it for a few days now.
Cheers!
Blog of the month! No one deserves it more. :-)
All I want to do these days is quit my job and do nothing but photography and blogging.
It's all your fault! :-) xoxoxo
Happy Valentine Day to you too and I love the image it looks like something out of the 1950's.
